UNITY TOWNSHIP, Pa.,None — A motorcyclist died Monday after being struck from behind by a sport utility vehicle in Unity Township, police said.
Anthony Markitell, 44, was struck on Route 30 near Village Drive and was taken to Latrobe Hospital in critical condition. He died a short time later, according to a deputy coroner.
Police said the SUV, driven by Janalee Westerman, 36, struck Markitell's motorcycle, pushing him into the intersection where he was struck by another vehicle.
Westerman and three children in the SUV were transported to Westmoreland Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
Firefighters said the crash this happened at a dangerous intersection.
"We have numerous accidents here," said Marguerite Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Forsyth, "It's pretty dangerous, usually from the lights. People run the red lights."
The westbound side of Route 30, near the Mountainview Inn, was closed for nearly four hours.
