SHANKSVILLE, Pa.,None — Visitors to the Flight 93 Memorial will be able to follow a walkway that is just over 100 yards away from where the plane plunged to earth.
For the first time, officials gave the media a behind-the-scenes look at the transformation taking place at the 9/11 memorial site.
The respectful, low-key design features dark concrete paths and a long, white marble wall inscribed with names of the 40 passengers and crew of the plane, Thursday's tour showed.
Flight 93 was traveling from Newark, N.J., to San Francisco when it was hijacked. Passengers fought back and the plane crashed into a field near rural Shanksville, about 65 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
The superintendent of National Parks for Western Pa. said he's proud of the project.
"It makes you stay focused on what the real intent of the memorial is and that is to honor the passengers and crews that took the plane down in the first battle. So it's an honor and a privilege for me," said Keith Newlin.
The Park Service said the first phase of is on schedule for opening ceremonies on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Some $50 million in public and private money has been raised for the memorial.
