No Charges Expected In Murrysville Pedestrian Death

MURRYSVILLE, Pa.,None — A 71-year-old man was rushed to a Pittsburgh hospital but later died after being struck by a car in Murrysville late Monday night.

The accident happened along Route 22, police said.

The victim has been identified as Joseph Mull, of Export. Authorities said he suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where he died a short time later.

The chief of Murrysville police said Mull was walking to the post office when the accident happened and that Mull was a well known and well liked person in the community.

"He worked at a car wash here and was very upbeat. He was a very nice person. He always shook your hand and said hi to you," said Chief Tom Seefeld.

Seefeld said for an unknown reason Mull parked his car across the highway then tried crossing the road to get to the post office.

"His vehicle was parked at Standard Bank and for whatever reason he walked across Route 22 to the post office and was coming back to his car across the highway again when he got hit," Seefeld said.

Seefeld said there was likely no way to avoid the accident and no charges will be filed.

"The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old male, is having a tough time with that. Although we don't feel there was anything he could have done to prevent it. It was a dreary night, rainy and the victim actually had on a dark jacket," Seefeld said.

The chief said he hopes the teen understands that the accident was not his fault.

The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and neck, according to the medical examiner.

The crash shut down Route 22 for hours while police investigated.

The 18-year-old driver's name has not been released.
