Orphaned baby otter gets a second chance at life

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RHODE ISLAND — An orphaned baby river otter has a second chance at life now.

The cute six week old otter weighing in at just two pounds was discovered abandoned in a Rhode Island backyard last week.

Animal experts say the furry baby was covered with ticks and visibly depressed when he was dropped off at the Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island.

It's believed something disturbed his family and he was left behind.

Fortunately, after some TLC, this otter's days are looking up.

He will be flown to the Wildlife Center of Kentucky to continue recovering in one of the premier otter enclosures in the country.

Arianna Mouradjian, the Director of Operations at the Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island, says:  "The best we could come up with is that perhaps something had disturbed the family and they were moving and they must have left him behind... They're very social. The family unit is very important for their development over time."

Once the baby otter is able to survive on his own, he will be released back into the wild in Kentucky.
