ROSSYLN FARMS, Pa.,None — Parents in Rosslyn Farms have begun a petition to secede from the Carlynton School District.
The school board's president said he was shocked to find out that parents would prefer to send their children to Chartiers Valley.
"How do I feel about it? I feel shocked and dismayed," said Tom Brown.
Rosslyn Farms Citizens for Education said according to Pennsylvania school code, parents have the right to petition to switch school if it will improve their children's education.
The group said it compared the Carlynton School District with nearby Chartiers Valley School District saying, "The petitioners examined this objective data to identify trend information and make certain projections that were the basis for the argument."
Brown said his school district does delivers and doesn't understand why parents disagree.
"I have no problem if a school district is not delivering what their supposed to be delivering, meaning a quality education, but we are delivering a quality education," Brown said. "We've had school board meetings in April, May, June and July. Not one time was it mentioned that this petition was out there signed."
Brown said Carlynton's test scores and advanced placement courses match up evenly with Chartiers Valley.
The Rosslyn Farms group said it has plans to take the petition to the court.
"Eighty-three percent of the households with school aged children had at least one parent sign the petition," a group representative said in a statement.
The court will decide if the petition meets the majority next Friday. If it does, the petition will go to the State Secretary of Education.
