Residents told to shelter in place due to chemical plant fire

CONEWAGO, Pa. — Officials are saying smoke from a chemical plant fire in Adams County is not considered toxic.

The fire started around 3:30 a.m. Monday at Miller Chemical and Fertilizer in Conewago.

It continued to burn as of 7:30 a.m.   Residents who live within a mile of the warehouse have been asked to shelter in place as a precaution.

Officials initially described the fire as a "major hazmat incident."   Explosions reportedly could be heard at the scene.

Miller Chemical says it manufactures non-hazardous crop protection and nutritional agrochemicals.
