FORT WORTH, Texas,None — For the fifth year, a Pittsburgh chef was one of 32 chefs to participate in the Taste of the NFL charity event on the eve of Super Bowl XLV.
Executive Chef Anthony Zallo of the Bigelow Grille was selected to be a part of the culinary lead-up to the big game as the representative of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was paired up with Steelers great Andy Russell.
The chefs are selected based on critic reviews, originality and quality of their menu and restaurant ratings.
Zallo prepared his homemade gnocchi with wild mushrooms, Gorgonzola and toasted walnuts, which he said is a Pittsburgh favorite at Bigelow Grille.
The event, held at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas, featured food and wine from chefs in each of the 32 NFL cities.
Attendees had the opportunity to sample food, meet the chefs and take photos with host players and special celebrity guests.
Since its inception in 1992, Taste of the NFL has raised more than $8 million for hunger related charities totaling nearly 72 million pounds of food. One of the charities to benefit from the event was the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
In addition to a portion of the proceeds from the event, the food bank will receive a check for $10,500, thanks to the Steelers winning the helmet auction. Russell's signed helmet went for $10,500.
