Pittsburgh Dentists Offer New, Laser Assisted Gum Procedure

PITTSBURGH,None — A new procedure in the battle against gum disease is being offered by four dentists in Western Pennsylvania.

Laser assisted new attachment procedure, or LANAP, could soon eliminate the need for stitches and healing from gum procedures.

Dr. Gregory Peterson said he uses the procedure in his Upper Saint Clair office.

"We go around each tooth with a thin fiber optic laser and comfortably vaporize the diseased tissue and then we go to the ultrasonic apparatus where we actually clean the particles. You don't even see those and then we put the laser on another setting and seal around the gums," Peterson said.

Peterson said the new procedure eliminates recovery time. The procedure can cost up to $4,000 if done on the entire mouth. Some dental insurance policies cover a portion of the costs.
