INDIANA, Pa.,None — State police said two sisters attending a drug clinic for heroin addiction kept using and fed their habit by burglarizing homes, sometimes with one woman's two young children nearby.
Misty Murphy, 30, of Indiana, Pa., and 27-year-old Amanda Koffman, of Clymer, remained jailed Thursday on charges including burglary and endangering children.
Police said Koffman's children were in the back seat of a car they drove to at least one burglary.
Investigators said the sisters would randomly choose a house, knock on the door and if a homeowner would answer they would tell them they were looking for a lost dog or having car problems.
If the homeowner wouldn't answer they would break in and start stealing things, police said.
Police said surveillance video showed Koffman using a stolen credit card and led them to search her car, where they found stolen items.
Police said when they learned Koffman sometimes lived with Murphy, they searched her mobile home and found more loot from four burglaries from Sept. 6 to 9.
"We believe it's all tied to the drug trade. We believe they were committing the burglaries to support a drug habit that they have," said Trooper John Matchik.
Police said Murphy told them her sister was "dope sick" and needed drugs.
