KITTANNING, Pa.,None — After two months of investigation, police have charged a married 42-year-old Armstrong School District teacher's aide who's accused of having sexual relations with a student.
Theresa Smith, of Worthington, is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student at least three times while she was employed at Kittanning High School, police said.
Smith, who admitted to having sex with the student, police said, is charged with corruption of a minor, according to court documents.
"I'm pretty shocked about it," said former student Desiree Rupp.
"The kids are unsafe. It's disgusting," said parent Lori Brink.
After conducting its own investigation in April, the Armstrong School District held an informal hearing and suspended Smith without pay pending further investigation.
In a statement released on Friday, the school district said, "A school district teacher aide has been charged by the Pennsylvania State Police with corruption of minors, and any disciplinary action against the teacher aide will be determined by school district officials."
"The administration emphasizes its commitment to the general welfare and safety of all district students. The school district has no reason to believe any other students were involved in any unacceptable and inappropriate conduct surrounding this incident," the district said.
Smith is free on her own recognizance and will be in court next week.
