Sharon football coach out of hospital, back at practice after attack

SHARON, Pa. — A Sharon football coach who was attacked inside his home by an unarmed intruder Sunday afternoon was released from the hospital Monday and addressed his team at practice.

Police Chief Mike Menster said Joseph Koscinski forced his way into Sharon High School football coach Jim Wildman's home about 4 p.m. Sunday and began assaulting Wildman.

Investigators said Koscinski, 38, kicked in Wildman’s door and then choked and bit his ear and face. Neighbors who saw Koscinski enter Wildman's home ran in to help.

“The two (men) wrestled him off me and then (a third man) came down until the police arrived,” Wildman said. “It was very fortunate they were in the area and so close.”

One of those neighbors, an off-duty Sharon officer, radioed a report of the attack and placed Koscinski under arrest, said Menster.

Wildman was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital and has been treated and released.

“I have no structural damage. My throat hurts, my head hurts and I have a black eye,” Wildman said.

Investigators said Wildman may have coached Koscinski 20 years ago, but no motive has been determined.

Channel 11's Jennifer Tomazic spoke to Wildman on Monday. He said he doesn't remember the man who attacked him and he doesn't know why he did it.
"I'm beaten up, but not beat," Wildman said.

Wildman met with his football players after getting out of the hospital Monday afternoon.

“It’s who I am and it’s what I do,” Wildman said.

Koscinski was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to be released Monday. He will face charges of aggravated assault, burglary, recklessly endangering another person and terroristic threats.

Wildman retired as Sharon's coach in 2002, only to be rehired in February.
