Report: Americans spend more eating out than at grocery stores

PITTSBURGH — A new report says for the first time ever, Americans are spending more money eating out than they are at grocery stores.

According to Commerce Department data released this week, sales at bars and restaurants were greater than sales at grocery stores.

In March, U.S. retail sales at restaurants rebounded better than many other categories, and millennial are spearheading the trend.

With millennial set to surpass the baby boomers as the largest living generation, restaurants are now working to attract younger people.

Meanwhile, older Americans are less willing to go out to eat, and instead are spending more of their money on groceries.
