Soccer Player, 15, Dies From Undetectable Heart Disease

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Pa.,None — Officials said a 15-year-old soccer player who died Monday in Beaver County died from an undetectable congenital heart condition.

The Franklin Township community gathered to mourn Monday evening after learning about the teen's death.

An official from Beaver County Christian School identified the boy as sophomore Sam Dickson.

Rose McChesney said Dickson collapsed during a break in a drill and was transported to Ellwood City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials said emergency responders were called to the park after witnesses thought the boy was having a seizure. When medics arrived, they had to call for backup because Dickson was in full cardiac arrest, authorities said.

"Naturally, we are in shock and grief over this event. Along with his parents, we rejoice in Sam's vibrant faith and deep commitment to Christ. We grieve, but not as those 'who have no hope' as we read in 1 Thessalonians 4:13," McChesney said in a statement released to Channel 11.

School officials said Dickson had been medically cleared to play.

"He was a remarkable young man. He was a great kid. He was responsible and dedicated to God at a young age. It's an honor to talk about him and celebrate his life," said Fairview Reformed Presbyterian Church pastor Jeff Zehnder.

School leaders said Dickson's teammates and coaches were called to the school on Tuesday for a meeting, where grief counselors were made available.
