S&S Candy & Cigar Company Reopens After Wall Collapse

PITTSBURGH,None — S & S Candy and Cigar Company in Pittsburgh's South Side is officially back open after one of the building's walls collapsed last month.

The retail portion of the business opened to customers on Thursday. The owners of the store said the wholesale portion of the company was never affected by the collapse.

The business opened in 1965 and sells tobacco and candy products wholesale and retail.

Officials from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Building Inspection said the collapse was likely caused by a freeze-thaw situation. Inspectors said when water gets between bricks and freezes, it thaws forcing the bricks to separate and fall.

The wall that fell away included a painted sign on the building's exterior, listing the products it sells.

The owner said the wall is now structurally sound and said he doesn't foresee problems in the future.

"Currently, right now, everything is safe and secure," said owner Dick Stephens. "There's actually no problem. Everything is more safe and sound than it's ever been."
