SWAT situation in Hazelwood ends peacefully; Man in custody

PITTSBURGH — A SWAT situation in Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood Tuesday ended peacefully, with one man taken into custody, police said.

Authorities said officers were called around 3:45 p.m. to a home in the 5000 block of Orinoco Street in Hazelwood for a report of a violent domestic situation involving a husband and wife.

The man, later identified as 52-year-old Bruce Avery, threatened to blow up the house after police arrived, officials said.

The SWAT team and bomb squad were called to the home around 4 p.m. Firefighters and paramedics also were dispatched.

Police said neighboring homes were evacuated, and the bomb squad turned the gas off to the home, where Avery was barricaded.

Negotiators were eventually able to talk Avery into surrendering without incident at 5:50 p.m.

Avery faces several charges, including simple assault, harassment, terroristic threats, and causing or risking a catastrophe.
