PITTSBURGH — A group of community activists as well as families marched from Freedom Corner to Pittsburgh’s Schenley Park, honoring the life of George Floyd, as well as the other lives lost to police brutality.
The march was part celebration, part memorial service. From music and dancing to moments of silence, people were able to express their emotions following the high-profile case.
“No one wins when someone has to go to jail and someone’s life is taken. This isn’t at true celebration, but it’s also to let the community know things are changing for us,” said Terrence McGeorge, Project Matters.
“I don’t think that it necessarily does all the things that need to be done or that should be done. But, I do think it’s a small step in the right direction and gives some hope, people are starting to see how things are truly in the country,” said Emma Konopka, Pittsburgh.
Tuesday’s march lasted 5 hours.
Police worked with organizations to block off the marching route during rush hour as well as prior to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ game at PPG Paints Arena.
