MONROEVILLE, Pa. — Demetrius Broadnax Jr. is a soft-spoken 12-year-old with a big heart.
“Instead of Christmas, he wanted to help other families,” said his grandmother, Diana Broadnax.
That means families who have lost a loved one to gun violence, as he has. Demetrius' father, Demetrius Broadnax Sr., was fatally shot in 2013.
In honor of his late father, Demetrius decided to give six families $50 each from the $300 he had saved up for Christmas.

“It feels good to help other people whose innocent family members got shot for no reason," Demetrius said. "It feels good to give something back to them.”
The act of kindness made the holidays a little brighter for Tonya Moon, whose son was killed in 2012.
“Tears immediately came from my eyes because this little boy lost his father too so he’s hurting, just like us," she said.

Ebony Jones lost three brothers to gun violence.
"You don’t see that, even in adults, and for a child to give up all he had to make another family happy, that bring tears to my heart,” she said.
Demetrius' gifts are a blessing they say they’ll never forget.
