2021 School Guide rankings: How local elementary school districts and charters scored over the past decade

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Business Times has released its exclusive rankings of the top-scoring local school districts and charter schools as ranked by PSSA test scoring at the elementary grade levels as part of the 2021 Guide to Southwestern Pennsylvania Schools.

Since standardized tests were not administered in 2020 due to the pandemic, rather than do the Business Times’ traditional annual rank based on the prior three years of test scores, we looked at a decade of data to see which districts and charters performed the best on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests from 2010 to 2019, the most-recent year of testing.

Students in grades three through eight take the PSSAs each year in math and English, with fourth and eighth graders also taking science tests. High schoolers take the Keystone Exams for proficiency.

There were 114 ranked among fifth grades, 114 ranked for fourth grades and 115 for third grade.

Mt. Lebanon School District led among fifth graders, South Fayette Township School District was tops for fourth graders and Peters Township School District led the way among third graders.
