Allegheny Co. reports highest single-day increase of COVID-19 hospitalizations since pandemic began

PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County saw a spike in COVID-19 cases with 198 new positive cases, 22 new hospitalizations, and 2 additional deaths reported Friday, according to the Allegheny County Health Department.

The 22 new hospitalizations in the last 24 hours are the highest Allegheny County has seen since the pandemic began.

With Friday’s new cases, Allegheny County’s total is now at 7,015 cases. The new positive cases come from 2,255 test results that span from July 6 through July 23.

New cases range in age from 2 months to 97 years with an average patient age of 42 years.

The total number of people who have died from coronavirus complications is 221. The deaths were a 54-year-old and 89-year-old whose dates of death are July 11 and July 22.

Across the state, there are 1,213 new positive COVID-19 cases, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. That brings the statewide total to 105,571.

There are 7,101 total deaths attributed to COVID-19, an increase of 22 new deaths reported. The positivity rate statewide over the last week was 4%. It’s a statistic health officials have been closely tracking.
