In March of last year, Nelson was babysitting three kids, all under the age of 10, when a 14-year-old boy visiting the home used the father's gun to shoot 13-year-old James Robert Gustafson, also known as J.R. The two teens were classmates at Mt. Pleasant.
J.R.'s family says this tragedy has taken a toll on the family.
"I think she deserves a lot more that what she was offered with a plea deal," Mark Gustafson, J.R.'s father said. "She's the one that was in charge that night and that took my son's life so I think she should be held more responsible than anyone else."
A date still needs to be scheduled for Nelson's trial.
