Ban on no-knock warrants introduced by Pittsburgh City Council despite not being option for Pa. law enforcement

PITTSBURGH — Members of the Pittsburgh City Council introduced a bill to ban no-knock warrants after the death of Breonna Taylor last year.

According to our partners at TribLive.com, Ricky Burgess and R. Danial Lavelle introduced the ordinance that would prevent police from conducting similar operations within the city.

Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said no-knock warrants are not and have not been used in the city. A spokesman for the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office said they are not an option in Pennsylvania.

The legislation will ensure it never is an option, according to Burgess.

Taylor, 26, was shot by plainclothes police officers at her home in Louisville, Ky in March 2020. The officers entered her apartment, Taylor’s boyfriend shot at them, and police returned fire. Her death has continually been highlighted during Black Lives Matter protests locally and nationally.
