Batch testing could be game-changer in fight against COVID-19

PITTSBURGH — A method of testing for COVID-19 is being called a potential game-changer in the fight against the virus.

Experts say it could speed up the entire process and cut down on backlogs.

Quest Diagnostics has been approved to use pooled samples, or batch testing, of COVID-19 tests.

The FDA recently gave emergency authorization for this measure to speed up results.

This new approach combines test samples in batches, instead of running each test one by one.

Labs would combine parts of samples from several people, such as a family, and test them together instead of doing each individual test.

Experts say a negative result would clear everyone in that batch.

A positive result would then require samples in the batch to be individually retested.

This method saves money, expands testing and stretches supplies, proponents said.

"Pooled specimen testing is a proven technique that will help us to optimize testing capacity at this critical time for our country," Quest Diagnostics told Channel 11.

Some people said at this point, anything could make a difference.

“We have to do something, too. So whatever helps or whatever could help, I’m all for it,” said Ellie Catoline of the North Hills.
