BEAVER FALLS — History could soon be made in Beaver Falls.
The city is on its way to electing the first black mayor after a primary upset over the incumbent.
Kenya Johns, a lifelong resident of Beaver Falls, beat two-term Mayor George Quay in the Democratic mayoral primary. She said she wants to see change.
“Just growing up I’ve seen a big shift in the city. I’ve seen a huge shift in where the city is and where the city should be,” Johns said.
Johns said she ran her candidacy to honor her mom and sister, who passed away within a month of one another last year.
“It’s been really hard and very challenging but the one thing I told her, mom I think I’m going to run, before she did pass and she said you can do it,” said Johns.

Johns could be the first black mayor for this city, and some people downtown are in support.
“I’m excited where I hope she brings good change to the city,” said Christine Carl.
“I’m glad we are going in the right direction with her. She’s the right woman for the job,” said Kani Jones-Thomas.
“It’s crazy in 2021 you’re still hearing first black anything, let alone first black woman mayor but all change is good,” said Shane Collier.
Johns, at 29, is one of the youngest mayors in the area. Channel 11 asked her if that could be a challenge.
“I have a wealth of knowledge and years of experience under my belt that have really prepared me for this and always open to learning and growing and working with everybody,” said Johns.
Her two running mates for city council also won in the primary -- Peggy Evans and Vanessa Taylor.
“We know we need diversity, more minorities in places, not just a seat at the table but making decisions that are impactful,” said Johns.
Johns wants more community involvement to improve the city. She said her first day in office would be addressing education and visiting schools to inspire kids.
Right now, there is no declared republican mayoral candidate in Beaver Falls for the general election in November.
