Case against suspects in shooting death of pizza delivery driver stalled

PITTSBURGH — Two teenage suspects accused of killing a pizza delivery driver in East Liberty were scheduled to face a judge Friday, but their hearing was continued.

D’Ambrosse Garland, 18, and Timothy Walls, 17, were set to have a preliminary hearing on criminal homicide charges in the death of Abdulganiyu Sanusi.

According to the criminal complaint, police said Garland and Walls are accused of setting up the attempted robbery that turned into a homicide.

Sanusi, who also went by Patrick Adesanya, was delivering pizza to the 200 block of Penn Avenue when he was shot and killed, according to police. Sanusi was a husband and a father of seven children.

Investigators from numerous agencies worked together, using surveillance images, social media, cell phone records and the help of witnesses.

For the first time Friday, Channel 11 spoke with one of the suspects' defense attorneys.  Jimmy Sheets was court-appointed to represent Garland.

“There's going to be evidence that the Commonwealth presents and we're gonna deal with it and make sure that Mr. Garland's constitutional rights are protected every step of the way,” Sheets said.

He said his client will plead not guilty.

Although according to court documents obtained by Channel 11, Garland spoke with investigators and said he felt bad about what happened.

“This is a very tragic situation with two young men who are looking at extensive amounts of time in prison, and a father of seven is a victim in this case so it's a tragic situation all around and hopefully, there will be some sort of resolution that brings peace and justice for everyone involved,” Sheets said.

Attorney Blaine Jones is representing Walls, the other suspect.

In addition to homicide, both are charged with robbery, conspiracy and gun charges. Walls will be charged as an adult.

Both defendants had their preliminary hearings continued to Dec. 14.
