PITTSBURGH — Investigators have determined the cause of a fire in the basement of the Gulf Tower in Downtown Pittsburgh was the building’s electrical system.
According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the flames sparked from “a failure of the secondary phase of the Gulf Tower’s electrical system” and not a piece of equipment from Duquesne Light.

Employees rushed out of the building as dozens of firefighters ran in following thick black smoke that could be seen billowing on May 19.
Fire crews emerging from the building were hosing each other down due to oils inside some of the equipment they had to work around.
