Check your travel vouchers! You might have to act fast as travel restrictions are lifted

PITTSBURGH — With travel restrictions now being lifted in places like Pennsylvania, people with travel vouchers from cancelled trips in 2020 might have to act fast.

If you have travel vouchers, you should read the fine print to figure out the expiration date -- and whether that date is when a new flight needs to be booked by or if it’s when you need to travel by. It might also be worth giving customer service a call.

“The airlines have actually been quite flexible with extending your vouchers, but only for people who ask to have them extended,” Scott Keyes, of Scott’s Cheap Flights, said.

A lot of airlines are still waiving change fees, but that’s expected to change as more people travel.

On March 1, the Transportation Security Administration screened about half as many passengers as the same day last year. Airports expect numbers to keep going up as the spring and summer inch closer.

Pittsburgh travel agent Joe Weigler said he’s seen a big increase in calls from people looking to plan spring and summer vacations.

“I think the vaccine is a major contributor to the reason we are having an uptick. I think people are confident that if they haven’t gotten it, they will be getting it soon, so they’re starting to make plans throughout the entire year,” Weigler, of Shadyside Travel, said.

Scott’s Cheap Flights expects airfare to increase this summer. You most likely will save money by booking summer airfare now.
