I-79 closure in Coraopolis could drastically affect commute times next week

CORAOPOLIS, Pa. — A closure on a highly traveled part of Interstate 79 next week could affect commutes in Allegheny County.

The closure is set to begin at 9 p.m., July 9, lasting through 5 a.m., July 12. Interstate 79 northbound will be closed at the Coraopolis exit and all traffic will be detoured from I-79 north, onto Exit 64 which is marked, “PA-51, Coraopolis, McKees Rocks.”

All I-79 north traffic will be routed onto SR-51, through Coraopolis. Traffic will continue up to the Sewickley Bridge, cross over the bridge, then be detoured back south on SR-65 (Ohio River Blvd.) where it will then flow on Kilbuck Street through Glenfield Borough, and back onto I-79 north from Kilbuck Street.

There will be officers posted at various locations to assist traffic during daylight hours, and signs will be in place.

The work is part of the Neville Island Bridge Project, according to PennDOT, which will rehab the bridge and ramps in the area.

This is the first of four such closures in the next few months, police in Ohio Township said. They will be putting out information on the other closures later.
