Concerns with college students set to return home amid COVID-19 surge

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Many Penn State students are set to return home to the Pittsburgh area for Thanksgiving break. Just like here at home, COVID-19 cases are surging in State College, too, creating concerns around spreading the virus.

“Anything to stop the spread locally is critically important because I believe we are at a stage where we’re concerned as we ever have been about the pandemic and it’s going to take everyone to get through these next couple of weeks to keep the positivity rate down and keep hospitalizations also down,” State College borough spokesperson Douglas Shontz.

Leaders there expressed concerns weeks ago over the combination of Halloween and the Nittany Lions taking on Ohio State. That Saturday, State College police broke up about 15 parties, which was far less than anticipated.

“A football game party is not really worth not seeing your family. It’s not worth getting someone else in your family sick,” Shontz said.

Penn State is offering all students and staff free COVID-19 testing before they head home for Thanksgiving. Students are also encouraged to follow CDC guidelines while they’re home with family and friends.

According to the university’s calendar, classes will resume following the holiday and finals will be in mid-December.
