Controversial parks tax passes in City of Pittsburgh, but not everyone is on board

PITTSBURGH — It’s been over a year of back and forth, but a controversial park tax has passed in the City of Pittsburgh, meaning voters there will see higher taxes in the new year and improved parks down the line.

The new tax aims to improve city parks and would charge property owners $50 for every $100,000 of assessed property value, which is estimated to raise $10 million annually.

The plan laid out by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservatory shows $57.9 million going into the city’s 160-plus parks.

During Monday’s meeting, the council voted 6 to 3 to approve the park’s trust fund.

Those three council members made it clear they aren’t in favor of this plan, citing that the tax increase, which is set to begin next year, will be a burden on homeowners.
