4 calves killed of 135 involved in truck crash on Pa. Turnpike

IRWIN, Pa. — A truck carrying calves was involved in a crash Tuesday morning on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The crash was reported shortly after 5 a.m. in the westbound lanes near the Irwin exit, Westmoreland County emergency dispatchers said.

Investigators said a tractor-trailer carrying the animals jackknifed getting off the ramp at the Irwin interchange, hitting a concrete barrier and folding into itself.

Four calves died in the crash and a few others were hurt. The driver was not injured, according to police.

The second level of the double-decker trailer reportedly collapse, falling onto some cows below.

The calves that were on the truck were moved to the side of the turnpike into a makeshift corral. They were kept there until they could be taken away.
