PITTSBURGH — Despite the City of Pittsburgh nixing a petition to have Wilkinsburg join its ranks, city leaders said they’re going to start exploring other annexation options.
Council President Theresa Kail-Smith introduced legislation on Tuesday to investigate mergers and annexations with neighboring boroughs and municipalities, and their school districts, according to our partners at TribLIVE.com.
The bill would allow City Council to collect all the information needed to make any decision, something several members said was lacking in the Wilkinsburg deal.
Under the bill, if a neighboring municipality would be found to be a good fit to add to the city, the council could vote to limit the scope of any further investigation to just those areas. If the investigation finds no merger or annexation is possible in the next two years, it would end unless two thirds of the council votes to extend it.
