Driver rescued after car plunges over hillside, into creek in Castle Shannon

CASTLE SHANNON, Pa. — The driver of an SUV was rescued Thursday night after officials said their vehicle plunged over a hillside and landed in a creek.

Investigators said they were called at around 8:40 p.m. to the area of Route 88 and Killarney Drive. Upon arrival, crews found an SUV about 40 feet over a steep embankment.

A man driving was the only person in the vehicle. Police said he crashed through the guardrail and went about 200 feet through a wooded area before coming to rest against several trees.

Rescue crews used ropes to pull the driver to safety. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Branches were sticking out of the SUV and all the air bags were deployed when it was hauled up the embankment.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
