PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle Pharmacy has started offering an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised.

The Centers for Disease Control approved an additional dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for people who fall into that category.

The additional dose must be from the same manufacturer as the first and second vaccine and can be administered 28 days after you have received a second dose.

Those who are moderately and severely immunocompromised are people who:

  • Have been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood.
  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system.
  • Received a stem cell transplant within the last two years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system.
  • Experience moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome).
  • Have advanced or untreated HIV infection.
  • Are in active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress the immune response.

People who meet and can verify these conditions can get an additional dose at any Giant Eagle Pharmacy location without an appointment.
