Homeowner records video of man destroying his basement, stealing pipe

A Sheraden homeowner looking at thousands of dollars in repairs believes the man who broke in and tore copper pipe out of his basement walls is someone who's been paying close attention his routine.

"I'm still struggling myself, and to do this, that's crazy,” said Jaron, who did not want his last name used.

He recently found his back door open and his belongings thrown everywhere.

"As soon as we came to the basement, it was like a tornado hit,” he said.

In a brazen burglary, a man forced his way into the Sheraden home, passing over furniture and electronics, making it clear he was on a mission for one thing: copper.

“Ripped down all the insulation and I happened to look over here and I didn't see any pipes,” Jaron said. “I started looking around at the water heater and pipes were gone on that."

However, Jaron has surveillance video of the theft.

"He breaks in the door and I think he noticed the one camera …” Jaron said.

Police confirmed they’re investigating the burglary.

In the video, the intruder takes nearly a half hour to get exactly what he wants. He even takes a sports bag out of his pants to store all the stolen goods.

"I think that's when he realized there was a camera there, so then he started ripping down the wires,” Jaron said. “You can see one of the wires dangling right here."

It was all caught on video, and Jaron is hoping it helps police find the culprit to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

"If he’d do this to me, no telling if he's gonna do this to somebody else,” Jaron said.
