Lightning strike was cause of fire at well-known bakery in Latrobe

LATROBE, Pa. — A lightning strike was the cause of a fire at a well-known bakery in Latrobe.

The fire started at Dainty Pastry Shoppe on Depot Street in Latrobe around 9:45 p.m. Thursday.

When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out of the back of the building.

In a text message, the owner told Channel 11 that it was determined from the investigation and video information that the bakery was struck by lightning in the back corner of the building where the electrical entrance was located.

The bakery has been in Latrobe and run by the same family for 75 years.

“It means a lot to me. I worked here for 18 years and they’ve been family,” said former employee Christine Cline.

Dainty Pastry opened its doors in 1947.

Decades later, it’s still standing even after this fire.

Firefighters got the fire under control in about an hour.

No one was inside the building when the fire started.

The back of the building sustained most of the damage, but the front, where the store is located, can be salvaged.
