Local car wash offering free service for front-line workers

GREENSBURG, Pa. — It's a tough time for first responders so a car wash in Westmoreland County has come up with a way to say thank you to them for all they do.

The owner of DeGennaro's Car Wash is offering quite the special: free car washes for first responders. It's his way of giving back.

For the last 80 days, Joe DeGennaro, 79, says he's opened his car wash, on Route 119 in South Greensburg, often working as a one man band.

And now, for those on the front lines, he's doing it for free through the month of May.

Free car washes for nurses, doctors, police, firefighters and other first responders, they're welcome to bring both their professional and personal vehicles.

DeGennaro is a retired Pennsylvania state trooper, and wanted to help them feel appreciated.

"I know what these people go through, especially the ambulance drivers and the policemen. It's a tough job," DeGennaro said.

Channel 11′s Liz Kilmer is talking with DeGennaro about what keeps him going and why this work is so important to him for Channel 11 News beginning at 5 p.m. on TV and in our streaming apps.
