Man accused of beating couple with ax, statue

IRWIN, Pa. — A Westmoreland County man is charged with attempted homicide after police say he attacked a man and woman with a battle ax and a statue.

Irwin police say Benson Perry of Claridge broke into a North Irwin apartment building by taking the door off the hinges early Monday morning.

Perry’s ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend were inside the top-floor apartment. They told police Perry allegedly attacked them with a battle ax, hitting their heads, upper bodies and arms. Perry allegedly took a porcelain Elvis statue and shattered it over the man's head.

The victim needed nearly a dozen staples in his head to close the wound. Both victims were treated at Forbes Hospital.

A neighbor told Channel 11 he rushed over to try to help and described their injuries as gruesome. He said the couple just moved in a few weeks ago.

Benson allegedly told the couple he was going to kill them before he fled. Police say it isn’t the first time he’s shown up at the apartment and attacked the couple.

Police arrested Benson early Tuesday, and he is in jail on $500,000 bond.
