Argument leads to deadly shooting at Monroeville Mall

MONROEVILLE, Pa. — One man is dead after a shooting at Monroeville Mall Wednesday afternoon.

According to police chief Doug Cole, just before 1:30 p.m. they received multiple 911 calls and found a 20-year-old man shot in the chest. The man had been shot in the parking lot and ran into the mall entrance. Cole said officers were on scene in four minutes after the first 911 calls.

That victim was taken to Forbes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Cole said investigators believe this was a targeted shooting and the gunman and victim both knew each other.

Wednesday night, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Saheed Gayle.

Homicide detectives said evidence showed the shooting occurred during an argument and Gayle was not randomly target. Witnesses, along with surveillance video, are helping aid the investigation, police said.

“I turned around and looked at her and said, ‘He has a gun,’ and we all ran and got in the car and heard two gunshots,” one woman said.

Cole said no arrests have been made yet in the shooting.

Channel 11′s crew at the scene could see large numbers of police officers outside mall entrances near JC Penney and Party City. An area of the sidewalk and parking lot in that area was also roped off with crime scene tape. There was at least one evidence marker on the pavement, as well as a pile of clothes near the entrance.

This isn’t the first time there has been criminal activity at the mall.

Two people were charged in September of 2019 for allegedly firing gunshots in the parking lot near the movie theater.

In February 2015, a couple was wounded when there was a shooting inside the Macy’s there.

They ultimately filed a lawsuit against the mall owner and the department store.

The violence there led Monroeville police to put a substation inside the mall, among other security changes.
