Man sentenced to prison for bludgeoning roommate to death

A man was sentenced to 8-16 years in prison on Tuesday for killing his roommate in 2016.

Robert Hunter was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the death of his friend and roommate Mark Lopata in Elliott.

When asked why he did it, Hunter said, "Only God, myself and the victim knows what happened that day."

The victim's family came to court hoping to find justice, but said that didn't happen.

"He should have gotten life. Manslaughter? I don't know where that came from," said Terisa Lopata, the victim's mother.

Lopata's family said anything less than life in prison is not nearly enough.

"Hunter needs to be, for the rest of his life, in prison suffering like my son suffered. When I asked Robert Hunter if my son suffered, he wouldn't answer me. He wouldn't look at me," Lopata said.

Hunter will be given credit for the last year he's spent in jail, so he could be out of prison in as few as seven years.
