Message of solidarity, unity and reform at Freedom Corner event

PITTSBURGH — There was a message of solidarity, unity and reform at an event held Sunday at Freedom Corner in the Hill District.

The event, which was organized by Stop the Violence Pittsburgh, brought together state representatives, church leaders and community activists to speak to the crowd. All of them shared their experiences and feelings following the murder of George Floyd.

“We’re not expecting them to know what it feels like to be inside of our skin or walk in our shoes, but the fact that all denominations are coming out, it shows they’re on the freedom side and they understand,” said Tracey Jennings, a community activist.

The event brought together a crowd of more than 200 people from various ages, races and backgrounds. Their goal is to bring a future of change and hope in the Pittsburgh area.

“The fact that it’s happening and we have the people who weren’t concerned before and not have the concern, people who usually wouldn’t speak up are speaking up, those are the people we need to change,” said Alphonso Sloan, a Pittsburgh police officer and one of the speakers.

The event lasted for more than three hours.
