During the COVID-19 pandemic, everyday tasks may seem impossible for people in vulnerable populations, like the elderly and immunocompromised.
But Lawrenceville United and community groups from across the Pittsburgh area are trying to lighten that stress with a “buddy system” for those who need the extra help.
“Picking up grocery for folks, picking up prescriptions, even making homemade meals and sometimes just checking in by phone and seeing how people are doing,” Lawrenceville United Executive Director David Breingan said.
It started with a call for volunteers, and the response was more than they ever expected.
TRENDING NOW:
“We received over 400 sign-ups from neighbors who stepped up to help, and we have since matched over 60 folks both in Lawrenceville and a bunch of neighborhoods,” Breingan said.
Some of those other neighborhoods include Bloomfield, Garfield, Polish Hill and Homewood.
At one point, buddies were even safely helping those who tested positive for the coronavirus.
“We actually have had a couple people who have signed up because they tested positive and knew they wouldn’t be able to leave the house for a while and needed someone to get groceries to them,” Breingan said.
There's no telling when the COVID-19 crisis will end, but the future of the buddy system is expected to be long-lasting.
Lawrenceville United said they have so many volunteers right now, but they could always use more help. Click here for more information.
