Nurse arrested for stealing medications in Butler County

SARVER, Pa. — A Butler County nurse is facing more than 70 charges after police said she stole prescription opioid medications from patients.

Karen L. Hemby, 46, of Ellwood City, faces 72 counts, including felony and misdemeanor theft and drug possession, after they said she was stealing prescription medications from her patients while working as a nurse at Fair Winds Manor Nursing Home at 126 Iron Bridge Road in Sarver.

According to court documents, police said Hemby had signed out 18 doses of medications between May 14 and July 3, but there were no matching records to signify that the medications had been properly dispensed to the patient.

The documents state that patients reported only receiving partial doses or none at all.

Police said Hemby admitted to stealing the medications to deal with pain in her teeth.
