BUTLER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Police are investigating after an officer reportedly fired a gun near a school bus stop and day care in Butler Township.
The officer fired the gun to put down a deer that was seriously hurt after it was hit by a car outside Kiddie City, which is located on Whitestown Road at Home Avenue, according to the Butler Township Police Department.
There is also a school bus stop at the intersection.
A woman said her grandson, a high school student in the Butler Area School District, was getting on his bus when she heard three gunshots. She said other parents were also dropping off their children at the time.
Workers at Kiddie City also heard the gunshots.
The Butler Township Police Department said its officers routinely put down injured deer, but they are investigating this specific incident. The department said the officer would not have fired his gun with children nearby.
“It was still dark out and I think that’s what made it hard for the officer to shoot the deer,” Heather Osmer said.
Others, like Nancy Carroll, felt it wasn’t the time or the place.
“They need to think about their judgement on where they are shooting and time of day because there was a school bus and little kids and that’s not a good mix,” she said.
Police said there were no children nearby or in danger when the deer was being dispatched.
