Police: Man defrauded people after their homes burned

Allegheny County police arrested a McKees Rocks man Friday for home improvement fraud.

Police say Jeffrey McGurk, a convicted felon from Philadelphia who moved to Pittsburgh to start a business, preyed on people whose houses had just gone up in flames.

He promised to take care of fire, smoke and water damage, but instead ripped off fire victims, police said.

McGurk would assure homeowners that certified technicians would perform the work, when he actually used untrained temporary laborers, according to police. He's also accused of over-charging the victims and their insurance companies for incomplete or shoddy work.

In many cases, items belonging to the victims were stolen.

Investigators are also looking for Thomas Bojanowski and Edward Sidney Rosenthal. They've issued warrants for the two, who work out of a Philadelphia company called Tri-state Public Adjusters.

McGurk faces numerous charges and is being held at the Allegheny County Jail.
