Push to lift Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 mitigation restrictions before Memorial Day has bipartisan support

CANONSBURG — A bipartisan group of Pennsylvania State Senators are asking Governor Tom Wolf to lift all COVID-19 mitigation restrictions before Memorial Day weekend.

“Move up that date to Friday, May 28, would give employers the ability to have such a great start to what we hope is going to be a full summer of recovery for both these employers and the people who work for them,” said St. Sen. Scott Martin, R-Lancaster County.

Sen. Martin along with 19 Republicans and 1 Democrat are asking the Wolf Administration to move up the timeline by three days.

“I think we need to allow our businesses to have an opportunity to turn profit this year. So many of them lost a lot of their profits last year. Struggling to survive. I think we need to do everything we can to allow them the opportunity to succeed,” said Diana Irey-Vaughan, Washington Co. Commissioner.

In Washington County, business owners welcome the proposal, hoping to take advantage of the holiday weekend.

“It’s a major impact on all businesses,” said James Oddi, business owner.

Oddi is the co-owner of Hodbrau.

“I still don’t have all the tables set up, so I can restrict seating and that’s been kind of difficult with people coming in,” said Oddi.

Oddi believes the community is ready to return to normal and take advantage of their locally owned businesses.

“With the weather getting better. Restrictions getting lessened. A lot of people are ready to get out their frustrations and they want to get out. Let Everyone get back into a regular routine,” said Oddi.
