PWSA offers to pay for nearly all youth football team’s equipment after state senator gets involved

PITTSBURGH — After flooding related to work being done by the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority ruined $8,000 of youth football equipment, the agency has agreed to pay for $7,000 of it after a Channel 11 report and the work of a state senator.

The president of the Greater Hazelwood Youth Sports and Mentoring Organization and the Hazelwood Cobras, James Cole, said he found the faucet on in the team’s storage headquarters and their equipment destroyed. PWSA was doing work inside the Burgwin Spray Park building with no notice provide.

Following Channel 11′s report, Cole said he appealed to local, city and state leaders for help. He said state Senator Jay Costa agreed PWSA was responsible for the damage and contacted the agency to fix the situation. Following that, Cole said PWSA contacted them to say it would pay $7,000 toward replacing the equipment.

Cole said if the equipment wasn’t going to be replaced, they’d have nothing for about 120 kids to use for their upcoming summer season.
