Ross Twp. to rename local park in honor of Bruno Sammartino

ROSS TWP. — Sangree Park in Ross Township will soon be no more. At least by name.

Ross Township will rename the local park in honor of a local wrestling icon during a ceremony on Friday.

Friends and family members of legendary professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino will be in attendance as township officials celebrate the new Sammartino Park, recognizing Sammartino’s 58 years as a Ross Township resident.

A new sign for the park will also be unveiled, which is located on Sangree Road.

Sammartino shot into the international spotlight with his work inside the wrestling ring and his work ethic outside of it. He held the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) title for 12 years, the longest anyone has held the title. He survived a broken neck and went back to the ring to fight again. He sold out Madison Square Garden 187 times.

Sammartino grew up in Italy, but moved to Pittsburgh in 1950. He passed away at the age of 82 in April 2018.
