Second Pitt basketball player leaves team to enter transfer portal

PITTSBURGH — For the second time in as many days, a Pitt basketball player is leaving the program, and has entered the transfer portal.

Head Coach Jeff Capel announced junior Au’Diese Toney will be departing the program Thursday.

Toney was also among Capel’s first recruits when Capel came to Pitt in 2018. This comes just a day after Xavier Johnson left the program and entered the transfer portal.

“We have come to the mutual agreement that Au’Diese will be leaving the Pitt Men’s Basketball program effective immediately,” said Capel. “We appreciate his efforts the past three seasons in our program and wish him well as he looks to continue to grow on and off the court.”

Toney averaged 14.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He scored in double-figures 12 times, with three games with 20 or more points scored. He concludes his Pitt career with 763 points, 423 rebounds and 80 steals.

The Pitt basketball team has lost the last four games and is 9-9 on the season.  The team has had eight games postponed this year due to ACC COVID-19 protocols. Its next game is Sunday at NC State.
