Several people charged after firing airsoft gun at kids at local park

ELIZABETH, Pa. — A neighbor that lives several feet from Duke Park in Elizabeth said a handful of kids were playing there when someone driving a van came by, slid its door open and someone inside began firing an airsoft gun directly at the children.

“Hit close enough and hard enough, it could take your eye out,” said Elizabeth Borough Police Chief William Sombo.

Sombo said the pellets hit five kids and injured three of them. Some of the children there at the time were as old as 15 and as young as one.

“We don’t have any connection between the actors and these kids. They just randomly picked this park. They just pulled up and unleashed on the kids in the park,” Sombo said.

A woman living nearby said she heard the entire thing.

“I heard the noise of a gun. It was like pow pow, a couple times, then the kids started screaming,” she said.

She said her son took cover under a picnic table while some of the older kids used their bodies to shield the younger ones.

A nearby camera caught an image of the driver of the van. Sombo said that person was wearing a purple wig.

Police said they have identified the 18-year-old driver and two juveniles who were also in the van. The spree didn’t end at the park. After leaving there, police said people in the van opened fire into traffic, hitting two people in a pickup truck.

“We are taking this seriously because where are they getting this idea? And apparently this wound up being a Snapchat video,” Sombo said.
