PITTSBURGH — There was a big celebration a Pittsburgh International Airport Thursday as Spirit Airlines began its flights. Spirit is adding seven destinations from Pittsburgh.

We are thrilled to expand our presence in Western Pennsylvania with new service from Pittsburgh International Airport,” said Mark Kopczak, vice president of network planning for Spirit Airlines.

The first flight from Dallas-Fort Worth pulled into the gate in Pittsburgh Thursday morning. The plane was doused in water in an official welcome ceremony.

“I’m certain those black and yellow planes will be a perfect fit. It’s fantastic that the airport’s growth is matching the renaissance of our region, and the addition of Spirit will help continue those gains,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said in a news release.
Spirit already operated out of Arnold Palmer Airport in Latrobe.
